چکیده

Recently, a minimal domain dubbed the numbers game has been proposed to illustrate well-known issues in co-evolutionary dynamics. The domain permits controlled introduction of features like intransitivity, allowing researchers to understand failings of a co-evolutionary algorithm in terms of the domain. In this paper, we show theoretically that a large class of co-evolution problems closely resemble this minimal domain. In particular, all the problems in this class can be embedded into an ordered, n-dimensional Euclidean space, and so can be construed as greater-than games. Thus, conclusions derived using the numbers game are more widely applicable than might be presumed. In light of this observation, we present a simple algorithm aimed at remedying focusing problems and relativism in the numbers game. With it we show empirically that, contrary to expectations, focusing in transitive games can be more troublesome for coevolutionary algorithms than intransitivity. Practitioners should therefore be just as wary of focusing issues in application domains.

The progress mechanism of track geometrical irregularity focusing on hanging sleepers

This topic is very traditional and basically has been concerned for a long time. A lot of sophisticated vehicle/track interaction model and track dynamic deterioration model have been developed so far. The author also developed a track settlement progress model comprising a vehicle/track interaction model and a track settlement law. Hanging sleepers are usually caused more or less by the dyn...

Geometric evolution laws for thin crystalline films: modeling and numerics

Geometrical evolution laws are widely used in continuum modeling of surface and interface motion in materials science. In this article, we first give a brief review of various kinds of geometrical evolution laws and their variational derivations, with an emphasis on strong anisotropy. We then survey some of the finite element based numerical methods for simulating the motion of interfaces focus...

Competitive intransitivity promotes species coexistence.

Using a spatially explicit cellular automaton model with local competition, we investigate the potential for varied levels of competitive intransitivity (i.e., nonhierarchical competition) to promote species coexistence. As predicted, on average, increased levels of intransitivity result in more sustained coexistence within simulated communities, although the outcome of competition also becomes...

Species coexistence, intransitivity, and topological variation in competitive tournaments.

Competitive intransitivity occurs when species' competitive abilities cannot be listed in a strict hierarchy, but rather form competitive loops, as in the game 'Rock-Paper-Scissors'. Indices are useful for summarizing intransitivity in communities; however, as with most indices, a great deal of information is compressed into single number. So while recent ecological theory, experiments, and nat...
